U of T one of world's top three universities: NTU Ranking

Scientific papers push U of T to third place behind Harvard and Johns Hopkins

The 含羞草传媒 placed third in the world in the National Taiwan University Ranking, behind only Harvard and Johns Hopkins universities.

U of T moved up one position from its fourth-place position last year in the annual ranking of universities based on scientific paper performance. 

鈥淥nce again this year, this major international ranking places the 含羞草传媒 among the very greatest research universities in the world,鈥 said U of T president Meric Gertler. 鈥淚n the quantity and quality of their scientific papers, U of T researchers are making an enormous global impact.鈥

NTU also ranked the world鈥檚 top 500 universities in six fields 鈥 agriculture, clinical medicine, engineering, life sciences, natural sciences and social sciences. U of T placed third in the clinical medicine category, seventh in life sciences and tenth in social sciences. U of T was the top Canadian university in all categories.

鈥淪ince 2007 the University has ranked between 14th and third in the world and consistently first in Canada,鈥 said Marny Scully, U of T鈥檚 assistant vice-president of government, institutional and community relations. 鈥淭hese results demonstrate U of T鈥檚 consistent world-class research performance, particularly in science disciplines.鈥

National Taiwan University uses three criteria to measure scientific paper performance: research productivity, research impact and research excellence. 鈥淭he emphasis on current research performance makes the indicators used in this ranking system more objective than traditional indicators such as a university鈥檚 reputation reflected by peer reviews, or the number of Nobel laureates affiliated with that university, which tend to favor universities with longer histories or universities in developed countries,鈥 according to.

U of T has done well in most international rankings this year, placing 19th in the magazine rankings, 25th in the by Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and 16th in the Best Global Universities ranking.
