The ��߲ݴ�ý is ranked first in Canada, second among North American public universities and among the top 25 institutions globally in the latest QS World University Rankings.

U of T continued to be recognized as one of the world’s leading public universities in the highly regarded annual ranking, placing just behind the University of California, Berkeley in North America.

The ranking, the largest-ever by U.K. analytics firm Quacquarelli Symonds, was released June 4 and placed U of T first in Canada and 25^th overall among more than 1,500 institutions.

U of T’s performance was buoyed by its scores for academic reputation, employer reputation, employment outcomes, international reach and sustainability – a category in which it ranked first in the world.

“This ranking affirms once again that the ��߲ݴ�ý provides a world-class education, generates important new research and prepares our graduates for leadership in virtually every field,” said U of T President Meric Gertler.

QS sampled a broader swath of schools for the 21^st edition of the global ranking, nearly doubling the number of institutions it evaluated to determine its published list of 1,500 universities across 106 education systems.

This year’s ranking also saw a reshuffling among the top echelon as universities from Asia and Europe continued to climb the charts. Several elite U.S. universities experienced double-digit drops, while U of T was down four spots compared to last year.

Nine weighted indicators are used to calculate a university’s overall score in the ranking. Based on a survey of international scholars, academic reputation carries the most weight at 30 per cent. U of T ranked 11^th globally on that front.

U of T also earned top marks for employer reputation, which accounts for 15 per cent of the score, based on a survey of employers from around the world.

Other indicators considered include: faculty-student ratio; citations per faculty; international faculty; international students; international research network; employment outcomes; and sustainability, where U of T took top spot.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Imperial College London and University of Oxford took the top three spots in the ranking.

Alongside U of T, three other Canadian universities made the top 100: McGill University (29^th), University of British Columbia (38^th) and University of Alberta (96^th).

The QS World University Rankings: Sustainability 2024 placed U of T first out of more than 1,400 institutions across 95 countries

The ��߲ݴ�ý has been named the most sustainable university in the world by the QS World University Rankings: Sustainability 2024, which evaluates post-secondary institutions for their environmental impact, social impact and governance.

The ranking, released today by London-based Quacquarelli Symonds, placed U of T first overall out of more than 1,400 institutions across 95 countries – up one place from the inaugural edition of the ranking last year.

U of T did particularly well in two of the three main areas comprising the overall ranking: environmental impact, where it moved up one spot to second globally; and social impact, where it ranked fourth in the world – up three spots. The university also tied for 15th place in the newly added category of governance.

“The ��߲ݴ�ý community is absolutely delighted by this recognition of our global leadership in sustainability,” said U of T President Meric Gertler. “It is a wonderful tribute to the innovation and commitment of the many U of T faculty, students, staff and alumni who are dedicated to meeting every aspect of this great challenge of the 21st century.

“They are demonstrating that effective action is possible on our campuses, in our communities and around the world.”

The QS sustainability ranking evaluates universities based on data used in the QS World University Rankings. That includes information from reputation surveys and research output related to the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals. It also considers the availability of institutional policies, operational data, alumni impact and national data from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development and World Bank.

The ranking uses more than 75 data points, grouped into nine lenses, to rank institutions in its three main categories. For environmental impact, the ranking examines environmental education, research and sustainability. For social impact, it looks at employability and outcomes, equality, health and well-being, impact of education and knowledge exchange. And for governance, the ranking evaluates indicators of good governance such as student representation and transparent financial reporting.

New data points introduced this year include net-zero commitments, renewable energy generation and citations of scholarly research in policy documents.

U of T’s exceptional global performance headlined a strong showing by Canada, which had two universities in the top five and three in the top 10 – more than any other country (the University of British Columbia ranked fourth and Western University ranked 10th).

The QS sustainability ranking comes amid several high-profile sustainability initiatives across U of T’s three campuses in recent years.

On the St. George campus, U of T has implemented a number of infrastructure projects aimed at achieving the goal of becoming climate-positive by 2050 – a goal it now expects to reach well ahead of schedule and has since been expanded to U of T Mississauga and U of T Scarborough. These include the construction of Canada’s largest urban geoexchange field beneath Front Campus, set to be operational in spring 2024, and plans for a significant retrofit of its district energy systems via Project LEAP, an effort supported by the Canada Infrastructure Bank.

At U of T Mississauga, sustainability is embedded into academic programs, research and campus operations per the Sustainability Strategic Plan. The campus has a high-tech geothermal system beside the Instructional Centre and is actively expanding the use of solar energy across its buildings. U of T Mississauga also launched Project SHIFT, an initiative to accelerate the transition from fossil fuels to electricity.

U of T Scarborough, too, has placed sustainability at the forefront of curricula, partnerships and planning through initiatives supported by its Sustainability Office. This fall, U of T Scarborough opened a new student residence that meets Passive House standards for energy-efficient construction and is also proceeding with new climate-responsible constructions including the Scarborough Academy of Medicine and Integrated Health (SAMIH) and the EaRTH (Phase 2) complex, part of the collaborative EaRTH District initiative that includes plans for a net-zero vertical farm. It's also the host of SDGs @ U of T, an institutional strategic initiative working to advance the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Nearly 30 per cent of all undergraduate courses at U of T in 2023-24 have a sustainability orientation, up from 25 per cent the previous year, and there are more than 100 graduate and PhD programs with sustainability-related content. Undergraduate students in all programs can participate in the Sustainability Pathways program, which allows them to explore sustainability from various disciplinary lenses and perspectives. Undergraduate and graduate students alike can also contribute to real-world sustainability initiatives on- and off-campus via the Campus as a Living Lab and Community-Engaged Learning initiatives.

The university is also making significant progress toward its 2021 commitment to divest from fossil fuel investments in its endowment fund and now collects a fee on all university-funded air travel to fund decarbonization and biodiversity projects on campus.

And researchers across the three campuses – such as those working with Climate Positive Energy, another U of T institutional strategic initiative – are generating new discoveries, technologies and knowledge that are contributing to a more sustainable future.

In a press release announcing the ranking, QS noted universities’ sustainability credentials play an increasingly important role in students’ decisions on where they want to study.

“Our 2023 Sustainability Survey revealed a striking trend: 79 per cent of prospective international students view an institution’s sustainability practices as extremely or very important. Additionally, 82 per cent actively seek information on these practices while researching universities,” wrote QS’s CEO Jessica Turner.

“This demonstrates a clear shift in priorities among today’s students – they are increasingly weighing the social and environmental impact of their future alma mater alongside academic excellence.”

U of T climbed 13 spots in the latest edition of the highly regarded annual ranking by U.K. analytics firm Quacquarelli Symonds, placing it first in Canada and 21st out of the 1499 universities included in this year’s ranking.

Among public universities, U of T placed 12th globally and second in North America behind only the University of California, Berkeley.

U of T’s strong performance was propelled in part by a change in methodology that saw the university gain top marks for its second-place performance in the the first-ever QS sustainability ranking last year as well as its historically strong performance in graduate employability.

“This latest ranking underscores the ��߲ݴ�ý’s world-leading scholarship, research and teaching excellence across a remarkably broad spectrum of disciplines,” said U of T President Meric Gertler.

“Faculty, students, librarians and staff across our three campuses, along with our alumni around the world, can be very proud of this testament to their talent, creativity and impact.”

For its 2024 ranking, QS expanded the set of measures it uses from six to nine, which were assigned different weights to calculate each school’s overall score.

U of T excelled in the three new categories, which each contributed five per cent to the final tally – international research network (46th globally), employment outcomes (22nd) and, in particular, sustainability (second).

Academic reputation, based on a survey of scholars across the globe, carried the most weight at 30 per cent. U of T ranked 11th in the world for that indicator.

Employer reputation accounted for 15 per cent of performance – an increase from 10 per cent in previous rankings – as measured by a survey sent to global employers. U of T ranked 33rd globally on that measure.

The remaining categories include: citations per faculty (20 per cent), faculty-student ratio (10 per cent), international faculty ratio (five per cent) and international student ratio (five per cent).

The top three schools in the latest ranking were Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University of Cambridge and University of Oxford.

Two other Canadian schools joined U of T in the top 100: McGill University (30th) and University of British Columbia (34th).

It is the second consecutive year that U of T has held all three positions in the highly regarded annual ranking of the world’s top 1,000 universities by Quacquarelli Symonds, a London, U.K.-based analytics firm.

U of T’s overall performance in the ranking – which includes both private and public schools – was 26^thin the world, down one spot from a year earlier.

“Our strong global standing has remained incredibly consistent over the years,” said U of T President Meric Gertler.

“These rankings reflect U of T’s continued excellence in research and scholarship, as well as our outstanding reputation worldwide among students and employers.”

The QS World University Rankings are determined based on each school’s performance in six different weighted measures. They are academic reputation, reputation among employers, faculty-student ratio, citations per faculty, international faculty ratio and international student ratio.

Of all the measures, academic reputation carries the greatest weight, accounting for 40 per cent of an institution’s overall score. It’s calculated using a survey of more than 100,000 individuals associated with academic institutions.

In an effort to gauge employers' views on which universities produce the most "competent, innovative and effective graduates," Quacquarelli Symonds reviews nearly 50,000 responses to its QS Employer Survey, which is the largest of its kind in the world. Citations per faculty, meanwhile, measure a university’s research output.

U of T earned particularly high scores in academic reputation and reputation among employers, as well as international faculty and student ratios. According to QS, U of T’s academic reputation ranked 13^th in the world, up two spots from last year.

The top two spots in this year’s ranking went to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) followed by the University of Oxford. Stanford University and the University of Cambridge shared the third-place ranking.

In addition to U of T, two other Canadian universities ranked in the top 100: McGill University (27^th) and the University of British Columbia (46^th).

Among public universities, U of T ranked second in North America and 15th globally.

U of T achieved particularly high scores in academic and employer reputation in this year’s QS World University Rankings, which ranks schools based on six different weighted measures. For employer reputation, QS asks nearly 45,000 employers to rank institutions in terms of which produce “the most competent, innovative, and effective graduates.”

U of T’s score for “academic reputation” was 15^th-highest in the world, according to QS.

One of the drivers behind U of T’s four-spot climb in the latest rankings was an increase in citations per faculty – a measure of research output.

The top three spots in the QS World University Rankings 2021 were unchanged from last year: Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Stanford University and Harvard University – in that order.

The ��߲ݴ�ý ranked first in Canada in five broad subject areas – and in 30 of 45 specific subjects in which U of T was ranked – in the latest annual subject ranking by Quacquarelli Symonds, the London-based analytics and insights firm.

The QS University Rankings by Subject 2020, released Tuesday, also ranked U of T in the top 50 globally for 43 subjects, a result unmatched by any other university.

“This ranking, like other global university rankings, highlights the ��߲ݴ�ý’s excellence across an incredibly wide range of disciplines,” said U of T President Meric Gertler.

“It’s one of U of T’s distinctive qualities – and one of the many reasons U of T is such an exciting place for students to learn, and to engage in research and innovation.”

The QS World University Rankings by Subject ranked nearly 1,400 institutions based on academic survey results, employer review survey results, citations per research paper and the H-index, an author-level metric that attempts to capture the productivity and impact of a scholar’s publications. In the arts, humanities and social sciences rankings, academic and employer surveys weigh more heavily than STEM subjects, where citation-based indicators are more important.

U of T placed in the top 10 globally in the QS subject ranking in eight subjects. They were: library and information management (third); pharmacy and pharmacology (fourth); sports-related subjects (fifth); education (fifth); nursing (eighth); anatomy and physiology (10^th); computer science (10^th); and English language and literature (10^th).

U of T also ranked in the top 25 for 31 subjects, placing it in the company of several other top-tier schools like the University of California, Berkeley, Cambridge University, Harvard University, University of Oxford, Stanford University and University of California, Los Angeles.

A stellar academic reputation helped secure the ��߲ݴ�ý’s position as one of the top post-secondary institutions in the world in the latest QS World University Rankings.

The prestigious annual list, published by higher education firm Quacquarelli Symonds, ranked U of T first in Canada and 29^th out of more than 1,000 universities worldwide.

Among public institutions, meanwhile, U of T ranked 18^th globally and third in North America.

“The ��߲ݴ�ý is grateful to be recognized once again as one of the top academic institutions in the world,” said U of T President Meric Gertler.

“It is a reflection of our commitment to excellence as a leading institution of research and learning.”

The QS World University Rankings is based on six measures: academic reputation, employer reputation, international student and faculty scores, a faculty-student ratio score and a citations-faculty score.

U of T, which was 28^th globally in the same ranking last year, achieved some of its highest marks in the academic and employer reputation measures. The university rose one spot to 17^th globally in the academic reputation measure this year, and eight spots, to 27^th from 35^th, in employer reputation.

Six other Canadian universities were in QS’s top 200 this year. They include McGill University, which ranked 35^th and the University of British Columbia, which ranked 51^st.

The top-ranked university on this year’s list was the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

In the QS World University Subject Rankings earlier this year, U of T held the top spot nationally for five broad subject areas and ranked in the top 10 globally for six subjects.

In the Times Higher Education ranking, U of T leads Canadian universities and is one of only eight universities in the world to place in the top 50 across 11 subjects.

Whether in classics and ancient history or electrical engineering, the ��߲ݴ�ý continues to demonstrate excellence in a wide range of fields.

U of T remains the highest-ranked university in Canada in five broad subject areas included in the annual QS World University subject rankings, which were released today. It is also the only university in the world to rank in the top 50 for the vast majority of specific subjects included in the rankings.

U of T placed in the top ten globally in six QS subjects: library and information management (3^rd), pharmacy and pharmacology (4^th), sports-related subjects (5^th), education (7^th), nursing (7^th), and anatomy and physiology (8^th).

“We're pleased to see the ��߲ݴ�ý recognized for its strength across so many disciplines,” said U of T President Meric Gertler. “This breadth of excellence gives students in all subject areas the opportunity to study with some of the world's leading scholars.

“It also makes U of T one of the best places in the world to pursue the kind of multidisciplinary research required to address the increasingly complex challenges of our time.”

Quacquarelli Symonds, whose head office is in London, ranks the world's universities based on a variety of sources. They use academic and employer review surveys, each gathering tens of thousands of responses, to measure an institution's reputation by subject. They refer to Scopus, an abstract and citation database, to compile information about faculty members' impact and productivity. All data comes from third-party sources, not from the institutions themselves.

More than 1,200 institutions were ranked across 48 subjects this year. To compile this year's results, QS analyzed over 22 million papers, which produced close to 200 million citations.

U of T’s ranking improved in 22 subjects this year, spanning a range of disciplines: arts and humanities; engineering and technology; life sciences and medicine; natural sciences; and social sciences and management. In modern languages, for example, U of T climbed nine spots to 21^st place. In pharmacy and pharmacology, meanwhile, the university’s ranking rose to 4^thplace from 15^th place a year earlier.

U of T ranked first in Canada in 30 of the 45 subject areas in which it was ranked, tying for first with another Canadian university in one subject. It was also one of a handful of universities that ranked in the top 25 for 34 subjects. Only six other universities ranked in the top 25 in more subjects. They are: University of California, Berkeley, University of Cambridge, Harvard University, University of Oxford, Stanford University and University of California, Los Angeles.

A rock-solid academic reputation – recognized by employers and scholars around the world – has again propelled the ��߲ݴ�ý to the upper tier of top global universities.

At 28^th – up three spots from last year – U of T is among the top global universities surveyed in the prestigious QS World University Rankings for 2019, published by global higher education company Quacquarelli Symonds. MIT landed in first place again this year.

Compared to other public universities on the list, U of T placed even higher at 16^th in the world and third in North America behind Michigan (20^th) and University of California, Berkeley (27^th).

Last week, U of T was ranked 22^nd in the world by Times Higher Education based on the strength of its university brand.

“The ��߲ݴ�ý community is thankful for the recognition from our research peers and business leaders around the globe across such a wide range of subject areas,” said Vivek Goel, U of T’s vice-president of research and innovation.

“It’s clear they see the tremendous value of hiring graduates with a U of T degree and in partnering with our researchers in the pursuit of critically important knowledge. It's rare to have such breadth and depth of scholarship in one institution. This ensures our students have the best and broadest learning opportunities with leading scholars."

The ��߲ݴ�ý was again the top ranked Canadian post-secondary institution by QS, followed by McGill (33^rd) and UBC (44^th) in the top 100.

QS bases its ranking system on six criteria: academic reputation, employer reputation, faculty-to-student ratio, citations per faculty, international faculty and international students.

When it comes to academic reputation alone, U of T ranked 18^th in the world, QS reported. The university also has a solid reputation among employers, ranking 35^th, and made strides in its rankings for international students.
